The channels, ranked by what they actually produce
Google Business Profile. For most home service trades this produces more calls than anything else, it is free, and the work is under your control. If it is not complete and current, nothing else should be started first.
Organic search. Slow to build, cheap per customer once established, and durable. Pages that answer what customers ask — what it costs, how long it takes, whether it is urgent — do the work.
Paid search. Fast, measurable, expensive per click in competitive trades. Right for urgent services and for filling gaps.
Past customers and referrals. The cheapest customers available and the most under-used. A business with several hundred past customers and no way to contact them is wasting its best asset.
Lead-buying services. Fast and simple, and the trade-offs are significant — see below.
Door canvassing. Works for visible, storm-driven and neighbourhood-clustered work. Labour-intensive and governed by local solicitation rules worth checking first.
Paid social. Best used for remarketing and for services people do not search for.
Be careful with lead-buying services
They are the fastest way to get enquiries and the most commonly regretted:
- The same lead is frequently sold to several contractors, so you compete on speed and price
- You do not own the customer relationship
- Costs rise as competition on the platform rises
- Lead quality varies and disputing bad leads takes time
- You build nothing durable — stop paying and it ends immediately
They have a legitimate use: a new business with no other channel, or filling a genuinely quiet period. They are a poor foundation for a business that intends to still be here in five years.
If you use them, track cost per booked job rather than cost per lead, and be ruthless about it.
What decides the outcome in this market
Katy and the surrounding communities have many competing home service businesses within a short drive, which means:
Speed of response wins jobs. The first to answer frequently gets the work, regardless of price or presentation.
Published prices win consideration. Most competitors say "call for a quote". The one that gives a range gets contacted.
Reviews decide between similar options. Volume, recency and how complaints are answered.
Availability matters more than credentials. "We can be there tomorrow morning" beats another certification.
A sensible order for a small operation
- Google Business Profile complete and reviews being asked for consistently
- Website that loads fast, publishes prices, and makes calling easy
- Answer the phone — measure your answer rate, it is usually worse than you think
- Follow up every quote
- Contact past customers on a schedule
- Then paid search for urgent terms
- Then everything else
Steps one to five cost time rather than money and they are where most of the available improvement is.
What outside help costs
Starter Presence — $2,500 setup, $750 a month for a single-crew operation. Growth Engine at $5,500 and $1,500 where service and area pages plus ongoing content are needed.
Frequently asked questions
Which channel produces the most for home services?
Google Business Profile for most trades — it typically produces more calls than anything else, it is free, and the work is under your control. Nothing else should start before it is complete and current.
Are lead-buying services worth it?
They are fast and commonly regretted. The same lead is often sold to several contractors, you do not own the relationship, costs rise with platform competition, and you build nothing durable. Useful for a new business or a quiet period.
What decides who wins the job locally?
Speed of response above all — the first to answer frequently wins regardless of price. Then published prices, then reviews, then availability. "We can be there tomorrow" beats another certification.
What order should a small operation work in?
Profile and reviews, then a fast site with published prices, then measuring and fixing your answer rate, then following up quotes, then contacting past customers — before spending anything on paid search.
Where is the biggest free improvement?
Answer rate. Most owners have never measured it and it is usually worse than they think, and every unanswered call is a lead already paid for and then discarded.
